Professor Brady gave the class a lecture on
the topic of perception during the play “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee
Williams. She told us that people just want social acceptance. The class agreed
that Blanche was in the wrong throughout the play and that she shouldn’t have
done the things she did. Blanche was mentally ill from her troubles in life and wasn’t able to accept herself
for many reasons.
I tend to agree that we all want acceptance but only
to a certain extent. I’ve always been a very strong girl, brought up by strong
parents who told me to make sure I’m happy and that if I’m doing the right
thing then it doesn’t matter what others thing. I have accepted myself the way I am and I'm proud of it! I think one of the keys to life is to love accept yourself for who you are; take the good and bad things happily. I find it very interesting that
people are so judgmental yet in a way we all want the same thing yet we’re too
ignorant to accept each other. One of my best friends will do anything if you tell her it's irritating or annoying, even if it stops her from doing what comes naturally. It frustrates
me because I’m not at all like that and it doesn’t make sense to me how someone
could be. After Brady’s lesson however, my eyes were opened to the other side
and how many people a need for social acceptance effects.
So what do you think? Have
others accepted you or have you finally accepted yourself?
